As a graphic design intern/freelancer under Cherry Discotheque, I was tasked with a few social media posts per week, usually inclusive of one theme night set of posts and digital collaterals. Those collaterals usually included a main instagram/facebook post, 5 days worth of instagram stories (just a mograph design template with a music video inserted) and theme night projector videos. I was juggling this along with school, and thankfully the team was quite understanding of that and adjusted the workload during different periods. However, it was still quite a lot of work to get done in a week, and there were many times that I got quite stressed over this, and had to tide through that while under the pressure of a deadline.
The upside was that it was genuinely really fun creating social media content for a brand that I really admired. I was introduced to Cherry Discotheque a few months prior to this job, and immediately fell in love with the branding and art direction of the whole page, and having the opportunity to work with them was really a dream come true.
The theme night posts were really fun to create as I was able to experiment with visuals and art directions of different eras – from the 70s to present day – and the requirement of mograph collaterals made it really exciting to play around with different visual elements and such. To this day, I think I’ve created over 70 visual concepts for their socials, not including each concept's individual collaterals… really put the cherry on top
Overall, this internship allowed me a great deal of creative freedom which catalysed my growth and love for really experimental and trendy design works.
My favorite posts, out of all my works at Cherry, has got to the Cherry Valley High poster series. I got to play with "old-school" school creative ideas that felt nostalgic to the 18-20+ audience who enjoys going to Cherry for parties. I was given creative freedom to just go crazy and do whatever for these posts so I had a lot of fun putting comedic twists to link pop culture and iconically Singaporean expriences such as shading OAS sheets, or having our own bus cards for public transport. It was also a lot of fun writing spicy and satirical copy for the random little quotes and phrases sprinkled throughout these posts :-)
This being my first ever internship, it was a huge struggle as a year 2 polytechnic student, juggling my own school work, academic club exco responsibilities and an internship. Time management and tenacious grit helped me get through this period — but it also wasn't all that tough because I seriously enjoyed the creative outlet that Cherry's work gave me. Aside from the workload, I also found myself struggling to create good posters for themed nights with genre of music that I wasn't super familiar with (e.g. rap and hip hop), but eventually found myself doing more research into the genre and coming to like it way more. I think Cherry sparked my love for 90s shoegaze music... iconic... <3
